Sanday Leads Area Players at PGA Qualifier

Jeff Sanday, who played at Cal State Northridge, shot a six-under-par 66 in the first stage of the PGA Tour qualifying tournament Tuesday at Crystalaire Country Club in Llano and is in second place with three rounds to play.

Sanday trails leader Mike Barnett of Mill Creek, Wash., by two strokes.

Chris Zambri, who played at Westlake High, and John Johnson of Ventura are among a group of four players who shot 67.

Paul Holtby of Moorpark is in a group of five golfers tied at 68.

Other players from the region include former Pepperdine assistant coach Kevin Marsh at 69; Jason Gore of Valencia and Corby Segal of Burbank at 70, Chad Wright of Ventura and Brad Gallagher of Valencia at 71 and Brian Hull of La Canada at 72.

The first stage, one of 17 in the nation, runs through Friday. Officials estimate the top 23 players will advance to one of six second stage tournaments next month. The final stage is in Florida early in December.
