Motorcycle With Radar Added to Police Arsenal

Share

A new radar-equipped police motorcycle promises to make life more difficult for motorists who speed through the city on Beach Boulevard.

The city is spending $9,464 in state public safety funds to buy a 998-cc Kawasaki police motorcycle. The 92-horsepower motorcycle can travel a quarter mile in 13 seconds and has a top speed of 107 mph.

The motorcycle will bring radar traffic control to the city’s main thoroughfares. Radar up to now has only been used in residential neighborhoods, City Manager Terry Matz said.

No new officers are being added to the county-provided police force. One of the sheriff’s deputies is being trained for motorcycle patrol and is expected to be on duty by November.

“We think it’s only fair that we let all the citizens of Stanton know,” Councilman David John Shawver said. “It’s not a threat, but we will get that baby out there and see what we can do with it.”
