THE LOCALS

* CALIFORNIA (2-4, 0-3) at No. 13 UCLA (5-2, 3-1)

* KICKOFF: 12:30 p.m.

* STORYLINE: UCLA Coach Bob Toledo had set a goal of qualifying for a bowl, and the Bruins can probably do that Saturday with their sixth consecutive victory, which would be their first such streak since the Rose Bowl season of 1993. Since winning its first two games, Cal has lost four under new Coach Tom Holmoe.

* UCLA UPDATE: The Bruins, who lead the nation in scoring at 43.3 points a game, will have tailback Skip Hicks returning. He’s their leading scorer with 16 touchdowns but struggled last week because of a bruised bone. The Bruin defense, which gets better every week, will have nose guard Damon Smith returning. He missed last week’s game because of a foot infection.

* CAL UPDATE: The Golden Bears are struggling on defense, ranking last in the Pac-10 in sacks, scoring defense and pass efficiency defense and next to last in rushing defense. They are giving up 33.3 points a game.

* EDGE TO UCLA: The Bruins still believe they have a shot at playing in the Rose Bowl. They can, with a lot of help elsewhere. And they are among the best in the nation on offense, playing a team that is among the worst on defense.

* THE LINE: UCLA by 23 1/2.
