Marina, Huntington Beach Tie, 24-24

Marina and Huntington Beach played to a 24-24 tie Friday at Huntington Beach High, hurting the playoff chances for both teams.

Both teams missed field goals in the final minute and were left with 0-1-1 records in Sunset League play with tough games ahead.

Marina (4-2-1 overall) took a 17-7 halftime lead on two big plays.

Quarterback Scot Austin went 70 yards for a touchdown on bootleg. Joe Hendrickson intercepted a pass at the Oiler 19 to set up a one-yard touchdown run by Ray Mietkiewicz.

Mietkiewicz, a sophomore, led Marina with 167 yards rushing.

Huntington Beach (2-4-1) came back in the second half, as the Oiler passing game improved. Quarterback Jeff Lineberger completed 17 of 29 passes for 310 yards and a touchdown. He completed a 42-yard pass to Vince Strang to set up an Eric Yang one-yard touchdown run. Lineberger completed a 39-yard pass to Erik Cabrera on the next series to set up a 44-yard field goal by Brent Chancellor to tie the score, 17-17.

Cabrera had nine catches for 173 yards and Strang six catches for 124 yards.

Austin scored on a 26-yard run in the fourth quarter to give Marina the lead. Huntington Beach tied the score on an 8-yard pass from Lineberger to Cabrera.

Huntington Beach had a chance to win with 41 seconds left, but Chancellor’s 46-yard field goal was blocked by Travis Bond and Donald Lank.

Marina recovered the ball near midfield and got within field goal range. But Peter Dodosh’s kick was just wide right from 42 yards as time ran out.
