Scoring drought: For the second consecutive season, the Cal State Northridge men’s soccer team is floundering offensively. The Matadors (3-10-1) have been outscored, 29-13.

Keith West led the 1995 Matadors with 20 goals, but no player had more than seven last season and none has more than six thus far in 1997.

Coach Marwan Ass’ad said he has done all he can do to improve the team’s scoring.

“Even if you work on shooting basketballs for a long time, you’re not going to be Larry Bird,” Ass’ad said. “Scoring is instinct more than coaching. Our players, I don’t think they have the instincts to [score].”

Three-dimensional: For the Cal Lutheran women’s soccer team, three is better than one.

The Regals have played three goalkeepers this season, and the platooning has worked well.

Seniors Laura Corsi and Kim Carver split time last season as backups. They have been joined by freshman Brenda Coan.

Cal Lutheran is 13-3, including 10-0 in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, and has clinched a tie for its seventh consecutive conference title.

“What’s made it work is the players themselves,” Cal Lutheran Coach Dan Kuntz said. “They challenge each other to be the best goalkeepers they can be.”

Corsi has started 12 matches, posting a 10-2 record, including an 8-0 mark in the SCIAC.

Coan, who also plays defensive midfielder, has been in goal in eight games, including stints in four conference matches.

Carver has played in eight matches, including six in conference play.
