Prep Football Update

A look at the Southern Section divisions in which Orange County’s large-school football teams compete (rankings are from Southern Section divisional polls):

DIVISION I

Third-ranked Los Angeles Loyola’s 3-0 victory over fourth-ranked La Puente Bishop Amat Friday night left the Cubs alone in first place in the Del Rey League, but another game in that league could have ramifications as well. Encino Crespi’s 31-14 loss to Bellflower St. John Bosco increased the chances that the division’s wild-card berth in the playoffs will go to a South Coast League or Sunset League team.

CITRUS BELT

DIVISION V

Eighth-ranked Villa Park’s 36-18 victory over Santa Ana Valley Saturday night set the stage for what could be the game that decides the Century League championship. The Spartans will meet Foothill Saturday at El Modena High School; both are 2-0 in the league. . . . Newport Harbor, ranked No. 5, was the lone ranked team to lose during the week.

CENTURY

DIVISION VII

Second-ranked La Mirada allowed 21 points in a season-opening 21-21 tie with Capistrano Valley, but has surrendered just 19 points in winning its last six games. . . . Costa Mesa, ranked No. 3, had given up just 10 points in its first six games before allowing 13 to Estancia in a 29-13 victory Friday night. . . . Only 13 of the division’s 32 teams have a winning record. Of that group, only three have lost more than one game.

FREEWAY

Standings: Sunny Hills 2-0, 6-1; Sonora 1-1, 3-4; Troy 1-1, 3-4; Buena Park 1-1, 2-5; Fullerton 0-1-1; 3-3-1; La Habra 0-1-1, 2-4-1.
