A 1-year-old Pomona girl was in serious condition Monday at County-USC Medical Center after her aunt’s car ran over her and she was pinned to the ground beneath a scalding catalytic converter, police said.

Lt. Larry Todd said the accident occurred shortly before 3 p.m. as the child, Ana Laura Ramos, was playing in an alley. The girl suffered third-degree burns over 30% of her body.

Her aunt, Maria De La Ramos Lopez, 29, was at the wheel of the car in the 700 block of East Monterey Avenue when it backed over the child, trapping the girl near the exhaust and catalytic converter, police said.

Two neighbors working on a car in the alley saw the child behind the car and yelled for the aunt to stop, but to no avail, police said.

But the pair acted quickly to free the child pinned tight under the car, with one of the men managing to lift the vehicle while another pulled the girl free, police said.
