Filming Permit Law Approval Expected

Cities in Orange County collected more than $5 million in direct revenue from film, video and still photography shoots last year, and officials in Westminster want a piece of the economic pie.

The City Council today is expected to approve filming regulations based on a model municipal ordinance drafted by the Orange County Film Commission.

The ordinance, which has been adopted by several cities in the county, is designed to streamline the permitting process and provide more uniform fees for production companies.

Filming in Westminster now is handled case by case through a special events permit, a process officials have criticized as being too slow for film industry needs.

The proposed ordinance sets daily fees of $200 for motion pictures, television and commercials and $100 for still photography in most public areas. The fees generally are increased if traffic or parking control is required, and they are reduced for student productions.

The City Council meets at 7 p.m. at 8200 Westminster Blvd.
