Archeological Plan for Hellman Site OKd
The controversial archeological research plan for the Hellman Ranch project was approved without fanfare by the City Council on Monday night, moving the residential and golf course development a step closer to reality.
The archeological research design outlines the methods to be used in surveying and excavating the 231-acre site.
Earlier reports indicate that Native American burial and village sites could be buried under the vacant land.
Native Americans have protested the plan, saying they fear sacred lands will be disturbed.
“You might take the bones out of the graves, but the flesh and blood is still in Mother Earth,” said Vera Robles of the Gabrielino-Shoshone tribe.
City officials have defended the archeological plans for the recently approved development, which includes 70 homes and an 18-hole public golf course.
