It’s Another Good Year for Jefferson

Share

After losing two of its first three games, including its Southeastern Conference opener against No. 3 Fremont, the Jefferson football team appears to be rolling toward the playoffs.

The 10th-ranked Democrats are 5-2 overall, 4-1 in conference play and riding a four-game winning streak going into Friday’s game against Garfield, which is coming off an emotional victory over rival Roosevelt.

Jefferson, under 11th-year Coach Hank Johnson, has been led by the talented quartet of Gary Love, who plays wide receiver, cornerback and also returns kicks; tailback Joshua Griffin, quarterback/linebacker Stanley Clark and fullback Quan Wilson.

The City Section Interscholastic Athletic Committee voted this week to reestablish a subcommittee to consider league realignment.

The IAC last month voted down a proposal to abandon its existing conference format. City Section Commissioner Barbara Fiege said it was unlikely that changes would be made in time for the 1998-99 school year.

The Larry Williams saga continues for Palisades’ football team, which has been forced to forfeit its Oct. 10 victory over Manual Arts.

Last week, Williams, a running back who moved to Los Angeles from Texas, was granted unrestricted eligibility by the City Section after he was held out of the No. 6 Dolphins’ 12-0 loss to top-ranked Westchester while his residency was being investigated.

But the IAC ruled that Williams was technically ineligible when he played against Manual Arts.

Williams will play Friday against University and Palisades Coach Ron Price said the school will appeal the forfeit on Wednesday before the rules committee.
