FRESHWATER

CASTAIC LAKE--A little bit of everything showing. J.P. McGinley,, Castaic, five trout to four pounds, on Power Bait at upper lake. Brian Stiver, Arcadia, 12-pound striped bass and 25 small largemouth bass. Eric Cole, Lancaster, 16- and 12-pound stripers, on AC plug. Jeff Manning, Castaic, 11-pound 12-ounce, 10-8 and 8-12 largemouths.

LAKE PIRU--Trolling for trout best bet, with Needlefish lures and Rapalas accounting for most limits. Bite is picking up slowly. Largemouth bass being caught sporadically at east end, with shad-pattern crankbaits working mornings and plastic worms during the days. No big fish. Catfish bite slow to fair. Best results at north end and dam on anchovies and mackerel.

PYRAMID LAKE--Striped bass have moved to deeper water but are still being caught by trollers using lead-core line and dragging chrome Kastmasters or drifting with anchovies fished at about 30 feet. Those able to net live shad are doing even better. Crappie and catfish action fair.

LAKE CACHUMA--Not a lot of action, but red-ear perch are keeping panfish anglers fairly busy off Cachuma Bay. Stringers of 10-20 fish common. Night crawlers getting most. Bass and trout action slow. Catfish action fair at night. New hours: 6:30 a.m.-5 p.m.

LAKE CASITAS--Trout action fair to good, with minijigs and Power Bait getting some limits. Catfish bite good. Leonard Gibson, Oak View, two catfish totaling 25 pounds, on mackerel. Mark Pennington, Ojai, six catfish totaling 40 pounds. Largemouth bass bite slow to fair. Only one at 10 pounds for the week.

CORONA LAKE--Trout season opens Nov. 8. Meanwhile, catfish remain the predominant catch, with one 14 pounds 7 ounces by Dale Grose, Oceanside, topping the list.

SANTA ANA RIVER LAKES--Same story as Corona Lake, although two sturgeon topping 20 pounds were noteworthy catches.

IRVINE LAKE--Put away the catfish bait and break out the Power Bait. Though there are still plenty of catfish, it is now trout season and 20,000 pounds of rainbows--many weighing three-six pounds--have been planted for today’s opener.

LAGUNA NIGUEL LAKE--Limits of catfish common for night fishermen. Bite is fair at best during day. Jung Yamato, Long Beach, 18-pound catfish, on head of a mackerel at inlet. Starting Sunday there is no limit on the number of catfish you can keep. Largemouth bass active at inlet, biting on lures resembling the small bluegills they are feeding on there.

LAKE SKINNER--Striped bass feeding mostly at Ramp 2, which is no surprise because that’s where trout were recently stocked. Trout-like lures best for stripers. Trout have yet to get comfortable enough with their surroundings to think about eating. Occasional largemouth bass and catfish being caught.

LAKE PERRIS--Largemouth bass very active but small, biting mostly on six-inch plastic worms near dam. Trout biting at Lot 6--site of recent plant--on glitter Power Bait. Several limits of pan-sized rainbows.

SILVERWOOD LAKE--Catfish and largemouth bass getting most attention, but bite is fair at best. Anchovies fished in marina best for catfish, a variety of lures--shad-colored crankbaits perhaps best--getting bass, which are scattered along the shoreline.

BIG BEAR LAKE--Trout scattered throughout lake, being caught mostly by trollers using Kastmasters, Rapalas and Needlefish, though still-fishing with Power Bait is somewhat effective. Some limits.

SAN DIEGO CITY LAKES--Hodges best bet, with a fair bass bite in progress for those using shiners, crankbaits, spinnerbaits and plastic worms. A few fish near 10 pounds, but most are under three.

LAKE CUYAMACA--No trout over three pounds, but lots of 1 1/2-pounders. Inflated night crawlers, No. 5 Rapalas and small spinners fished at dike getting most. A few bass still being caught, despite 55-degree water. Occasional catfish being caught at dam.
