Council to Set Date of Election on Fire Services

Share

Voters in West Covina will decide as early as December if the Fire Department should be replaced by county fire services, city officials said.

The city clerk’s office said a group that includes West Covina firefighters has submitted a petition with more than the 15% of registered voters needed to require a special election on the issue.

The West Covina Firefighters Assn. is advocating the move, arguing that it will mean better service for the city of just over 100,000 residents. Opponents say that changing to the Los Angeles County Fire district will increase costs and not improve service.

Deputy City Clerk Rita Buchanan said the petition contained 6,812 certified signatures of voters.

The City Council today will decide the date of the special election. The clerk’s office is recommending Dec. 2 or Dec. 9.

Voters in Alhambra also are slated to go to the polls to decide whether to switch to county fire protection.
