WSC Officials to Discuss Ventura Issue in October

Administrators of the Western State Conference will meet Oct. 8 to discuss possible sanctions against the Ventura College men’s basketball program.

The findings of a five-month investigation last week determined former Coach Virgil Watson and other Ventura representatives violated state rules.

Conference commissioner Aviva Kamin said she will recommend Ventura be stripped of its 1996 and ’97 WSC titles, and speculated the Pirates’ 1996 state title also will be revoked.

But Joanne Fortunato, commissioner of the state Commission on Athletics, declined to speculate on whether the state title would be revoked.

“It would not happen automatically,” Fortunato said. “There are too many things that need to be considered.”

Cal State Northridge came away from Boise State with a few injured players, including quarterback Aaron Flowers, who suffered a gash on his chin that required six stitches to close after the game.

Center David Joralemon and safety Vito Clemente hurt their knees, and running back Marcus Harvey suffered a turf burn on a knee from the blue artificial turf in Bronco Stadium. Northridge won, 63-23.

Former Montclair Prep infielder Brad Fullmer, promoted to the Montreal Expos this week, became the 74th player to homer in his first major league at-bat Tuesday when he hit a pinch home run against Cleveland High graduate Bret Saberhagen of the Boston Red Sox.

Former St. Genevieve High pitcher Roland De La Maza was traded by the Cleveland Indians to the Kansas City Royals on Sunday.
