SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

A hotel, restaurant and office complex on a high-profile lot across from Anaheim Stadium was approved Wednesday by the city Planning Commission.

Newport Beach-based Crown Realty & Development Inc. will build the Stadium Crossings project, which will cost up to $40 million, at the northeast corner of Katella Avenue and State College Boulevard.

Crown Realty President Robert A. Flaxman said the first phase will include a 140-room Marriott Towne Place Suites hotel, an LA Fitness Sports Club and several convenience-oriented food and coffee businesses.

A second phase will include several full-service restaurants and a 75,000-square-foot, three-story office building.

“We’re finding a tremendous need for the uses we’re proposing,” Flaxman said.

One eatery lined up is a Carl’s Jr. that will feature a unique design--a building fashioned like a French fry cup holder, with a star-shaped canopy supported by French fry columns.

Flaxman said the first phase of development will begin as soon as possible, with tenants moving in by spring. Construction of the second phase will begin in mid-1998.

Community Bank, the only existing development on the 12-acre site, will remain.

Stadium Crossings is Crown Realty’s first major commercial project in Orange County, Flaxman said. Flaxman said the property, which was in foreclosure, was purchased in September 1996.
