Larkin Has Surgery on Left Heel

Barry Larkin, out for the season because of an injured left heel, underwent surgery Wednesday and the Cincinnati Reds shortstop is expected to be ready for next year.

The operation lasted two hours at Cincinnati’s Good Samaritan Hospital. The team said Larkin should be able to start running in eight to 12 weeks.

Florida Marlin catcher Charles Johnson did not have an error against Baltimore on Wednesday, extending his streak of consecutive errorless games to 155, four shy of Rick Cerone’s major league record.

“You don’t start a season thinking you’re going to go errorless or not make a passed ball,” Johnson said. “You understand that things like that happen. It’s part of the game.”

A season without a passed ball is unusual for a catcher, and to go without an error is even more rare. But to do both in the same year?

“Amazing,” said Andy Etchebarren, a coach for the Baltimore Orioles and a major league catcher for 15 seasons. “If he catches 120 to 130 games and doesn’t have a passed ball or an error, that’s hard to believe.”

Chicago Cub outfielder Brooks Kieschnick, called up Tuesday from triple-A Iowa of the American Association, left in the seventh inning against Minnesota on Wednesday because of a cut and bruise to his right knee. . . Cincinnati Red owner Marge Schott attended Wednesday’s game against Kansas City and had her left arm in a sling. A team spokesman said she broke her wrist when she slipped on a rug at home.
