FISH REPORT
FRESHWATER
17. CASTAIC LAKE--Fishing has turned tough after a good week. Largest bass a 12-pounder by Mike Woernley, Canyon Country, on ox-blood-colored plastic worm at upper lake. Woernley also caught a 20-pound snapping turtle. Bluegill fair on red worms and wax worms at south end of lower lake. An 8-pound catfish was landed at the lower lake.
18. LAKE PIRU--Catfish action steady at north end, with chicken livers and mackerel getting mostly fish under 5 pounds, with a few closer to 10 pounds. Trout action fair off dam at about 50 feet, with Needlefish lures getting most. Largemouth bass slow to fair.
19. PYRAMID LAKE--Striped bass getting most attention, biting on surface lures in mornings and on anchovies a little deeper during the day, averaging 3-6 pounds. Bluegill and crappie picking up.
20. LAKE CACHUMA--Catfish best bet, biting on mackerel. Michael Brown, Topanga, 22-pound catfish, on mackerel at Santa Cruz Bay. Some trout still being caught in deep water at west end. Trollers using Needlefish lures at about 90 feet doing best. Largemouth bass fair on surface in mornings, biting deeper on crankbait during day.
21. LAKE CASITAS--Largemouth bass bite slow for the most part, but a lot of small fish are biting in early mornings on poppers, Rapalas and plastics. When the sun hits the water, the bite stops. Catfish bite has slowed, but it is still fair.
22. CORONA LAKE--Catfish fair to good, biting on mackerel in tree area in late afternoons. Largest, a 14-3.
23. SANTA ANA RIVER LAKES--Catfish good on mackerel. Top cat, a 49-7 by Bernard Lopez, Paramount, on a mealworm-marshmallow combo.
24. IRVINE LAKE--Catfish the prime attraction, but some anglers are doing well fishing crankbaits for bass. Crappie action steady at red-clay cliffs.
25. LAGUNA NIGUEL LAKE--Catfish action good at night, with fish averaging 3-5 pounds biting throughout lake. Largest, a 34-pounder by Tien Pham, Westminster, on mackerel at Dock 4.
26. LAKE SKINNER--Shad and surface lures fished in early mornings accounting for striped bass to about 10 pounds. Some being caught on anchovies during day. Other species slow.
27. LAKE PERRIS--Small bluegill providing most excitement, biting on crickets at about 20 feet. Small bass fairly active around island. Normal hot spot, the east end, is too grassy for good fishing.
28. SAN DIEGO CITY LAKES--San Vicente is the hot spot for crappie. El Capitan and Sutherland fair to good for largemouth bass. Occasional big catfish coming out of all lakes.
29. LAKE CUYAMACA--Trout good in mornings, with the fish on the small side, biting on small trolled lures and Power Bait.
30. BIG BEAR LAKE--No report.
31. BISHOP--North Lake best bet. Joe Dautremont, West Hills, 4-1 rainbow, on gold Panther Martin. Dautremont was outdone the next morning by his 9-year-old son, Paul, who caught a 4-2 on pink Power Bait at North Lake from shore.
32. MAMMOTH LAKES--Rock Creek Lake and Convict Lake best bets for big fish, with trout to 5-0 being landed in past week. Crowley Lake fair, as are all the lakes in the upper basin.
33. JUNE LAKE LOOP--Gull Lake excellent for those fishing with worms and rainbow Power Bait. Silver Lake produced a 5-7 rainbow for an angler using a Rapala. Rush Creek produced a 7-2 rainbow on a Kastmaster lure.
34. BRIDGEPORT--Bridgeport Reservoir best bet, regularly producing catches of quality-sized rainbows, with 5-pounders not uncommon. Average size, 1-3 pounds. Virginia Lakes fair to good for mostly pan-size rainbows. Twin Lakes slow to fair.

1. SAN SIMEON (Virg’s Landing)--19 anglers (1 boat): 12 lingcod, 80 red rockcod, 205 rockfish.
2. MORRO BAY (Virg’s Landing)--69 anglers (3 boats): 8 lingcod, 6 red rockcod, 307 rockcod, 67 albacore.
3. AVILA BAY (Avila Beach)--16 anglers (1 boat): 46 red rockcod, 194 rockcod, 7 lingcod, 1 cabezon.
4. SANTA BARBARA (Sea Landing)--24 anglers (2 boats): 175 calico bass, 14 sand bass, 17 barracuda, 1 whitefish. (Hornet’s Landing)--8 anglers (1 boat): 33 calico bass, 22 sand bass, 4 barracuda, 2 rockfish, 5 mackerel.
5. VENTURA (Captain Hook Sportlanding)--14 anglers (1 boat): 46 calico bass, 11 rockfish, 1 sculpin.
6. OXNARD (Cisco’s)--75 anglers (5 boats): 8 bullet tuna, 1 skipjack, 25 yellowtail, 2 sheephead, 11 sculpin, 7 sand bass, 35 rockfish, 1 halibut, 158 calico bass, 2 bonito, 20 blue perch, 9 barracuda. (Gold Coast)--11 anglers (1 boat): 13 barracuda, 1 calico bass, 15 rockfish, 1 sculpin, 25 whitefish.
7. PORT HUENEME--18 anglers (1 boat): 87 sand bass, 26 barracuda.
8. MARINA DEL REY--79 anglers (5 boats): 12 yellowtail, 11 barracuda, 42 calico bass, 48 sand bass, 84 sculpin.
9. REDONDO BEACH--102 anglers (5 boats): 168 yellowtail, 3 bonito, 40 calico bass, 25 sand bass, 16 barracuda, 7 sheephead, 1 sculpin.
10. SAN PEDRO (L.A. Harbor Sportfishing)--64 anglers (3 boats): 147 yellowtail, 58 barracuda, 37 bonito, 44 calico bass, 2 sand bass. (22nd St. Landing)--147 anglers (4 boats): 5 dorado, 318 yellowtail, 103 calico bass, 15 barracuda, 5 sand bass, 2 bonito, 6 sculpin.
