Officially named Laguna Niguel Pooch Park by the City Council this week, the community’s first facility for dogs is expected to open by early October, city officials said.

“We don’t have a specific date for the opening yet,” said Public Works Director Ken Montgomery. “We’re looking at the end of September or the beginning of October.”

The council chose Pooch Park from a list of seven potential names, including Dog Leg Park, Sea County Dog Park, Laguna Niguel Bark Park and Waggin’ Tail Park.

Located at Street of the Golden Lantern and Chapparosa Park, the 1-acre facility will be double-gated and fenced.

Amenities for two-legged users include rest benches. Dogs will get a canine-operated drinking fountain.

“The dog steps on a lever with his paw and the water squirts,” Montgomery said. “It’s going to be pretty cute.”
