To help students better understand their role in a multicultural society, Mission College’s Office of Student Services will host its second annual lecture series, “Unity in Diversity.”

Invited speakers will discuss multiculturalism in politics, law, media, education and business and its impact on mainstream society during the yearlong lecture series.

“The lecture series is designed to personalize the process of assimilation and acculturation into the American mainstream,” said Carlos Nava, dean of Students Services, who is coordinating the series along with philosophy instructor Larry Andre.

Assemblyman Tony Cardenas (D-Sylmar) will give the first lecture Sept. 15 with a presentation on the need for greater understanding among the diverse ethnic groups in Los Angeles.

Cardenas will be followed on Oct. 9 by Jorge Mancillas, a UCLA biology professor who organized and participated in a hunger strike last year in support of the university’s Chicano Studies program.

Mancillas intends to discuss the unification of humankind through multicultural education.

Los Angeles Dist. Atty. Gil Garcetti will round out the first semester presentations on Nov. 18 with a lecture on the practice of law in a culturally diverse society.

The free lectures run from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Campus Center, 13356 Eldridge Ave.
