PALMDALE — A 14-year-old boy was in critical condition Saturday with burns suffered in a carport fire late Friday, authorities said.
The teen, whose name was not released, was admitted to the intensive burn unit of County-USC Medical Center with second- and third-degree burns on 85% of his body, said hospital spokeswoman Adelaida De La Cerda. The boy had been treated at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles on Saturday morning before being transferred to County-USC, she said.
Sheriff’s Deputy Jim Hellmold said the fire broke out shortly before 11 p.m. Friday in the 500 block of East Avenue.
Sheriff’s arson/explosives detectives determined the blaze was accidental, but its cause is still under investigation, Hellmold said.
