College to Celebrate Mexico Independence
Traditional Mexican music and dance and literary readings will highlight a weeklong observance of Mexico’s Day of Independence at Oxnard College.
Festivities will begin Wednesday with a performance of classical Mexican music by Mexican pianist Rodolfo Ponce Montero, starting at 6 p.m. in the Letters and Sciences lecture hall on the college campus, which is at 4000 S. Rose Ave. The performance is being sponsored by the Oxnard office of the Mexican consulate.
At 7 p.m., Luis Fernando Brehem, cultural director to the governor of Guanajuato, Mexico, will give a lecture on Mexican literature and poetry in the Letters and Sciences hall.
The celebration will end Sept. 16 with a fiesta thrown by the Associated Students Governing Senate of Oxnard College. The party will begin at 10 a.m. near the college cafeteria and will be followed by songs and speeches. Homemade Mexican food will be served.
