Orange Coast

Coach: Bill Workman, 12th year, 58-55

Last year: 1-9, Workman’s worst season

This year: About 90 freshmen on the roster

Coming Back

Dave Brown, LB, 6-1, 235, So.

Chad Collins, QB, 6-2, 200, So.

Don Douglass, OL, 6-5, 275, So.

Scott Gray, LB, 6-3, 230, So.

Frough Jahid, DB, 6-1, 190, So.

Joe Khamis, TE, 6-2, 255, So.

Mike Knox, TE, 6-4, 245, So.

Tofi Tuipala, FB, 6-2, 245, So.

Coming In

Robert Gilliam, DB, 5-11, 185, Fr.

Michael Johnson, DB, 6-0, 185, Fr.

Ivan Mercer, TE/WR, 6-7, 225, Fr.

Ralph Puckett, DL, 6-3, 290, Fr.

Andre Stewart, RB, 5-9, 190, Fr.

Mike Switzer, OL, 6-1, 260, Fr.

Nick Vigil, WR, 5-9, 175, Fr.

Outlook: The only good thing about last season was it enabled Collins a chance to mature at quarterback. He completed 101 of 180 passes for 1,170 yards and six touchdowns and only two interceptions despite being constantly under pressure. Collins went through intense workouts over the summer and gained 20 pounds but has been slowed by a lingering illness the last two weeks. The offensive line lacks experience and Knox had knee surgery Sept. 3, so his football future is unclear. Mercer was a redshirt last season at Washington State. “We were just flat horrible last season,” Workman said. “On defense we’re still sorting through the piles of rubble to see what we have.”

Santa Ana

Coach: Dave Ogas, 16th year, 82-70-2

Last season: 6-4, tied for second in division

This season: Rallying behind name change

Coming Back

Kevin Cole, OL, 6-2, 262, So.

Dan DeClark, OL, 6-2, 260, So.

Steve Howard, OL, 6-3, 285, So.

Tony Magliocco, LB, 6-0, 220, So.

Kody Miller, DB, 6-1, 200, So.

Troy Mills, DB, 5-10, 180, So.

Aaron Kenney, TE, 6-4, 223, So.

Tramel Robinson, RB, 5-8, 175, So.

Byron Schley, RB, 6-0, 210, So.

Alex Pula, DL, 5-11, 245, So.

Coming In

Archie Lappin, QB, 5-9, 175, Fr.

Stanley Villanueva, QB, 5-10, 180, Fr.

Mike Lamar, QB, 6-1, 200, Fr.

Joey Meza, LB, 6-0, 215, So.

Terrence Williams, WR, 6-0, 160, Fr.

Outlook: Ogas is more excited about how well his players get along and how hard they work than he is about their talent. He told them recently in practice “they are fun to be around.” Williams has improved his work ethic greatly and has the potential to make a major impact. The offensive line is as experienced as any in the division. Robinson and Schley have plenty of experience at running back, but whoever wins the quarterback job--Lamar, Lappin or Villanueva--will be untested in a college game. The defense suffered a significant loss when linebacker Tony Romo went out for the year with a knee injury suffered in practice last week.

Golden West

Coach: Mike Shaughnessy, second year, 1-9

Last season: 1-9, beat rival OCC, 31-0

This season: Expectations are higher

Coming Back

Dan Cornelius, OL, 6-6, 315, So.

Micah Harrison, DB, 6-0, 202, So.

Mike McCullough, WR, 6-3, 208, So.

Tommy Navarro, DB, 6-0, 185, So.

DeShay Rice, DB, 5-9, 170, So.

Calvin Silva, DL, 6-4, 265, So.

Tim Sigafoos, DL, 6-1, 250, So.

Nick Stocks, LB, 6-2, 240. So.

Matt Thompson, TE, 6-3, 225, So.

Coming In

Ben Fulufulu, LB, 6-3, 230, Fr.

John Frank, QB, 6-1, 185, So.

Marcus Hall, LB, 6-1, 210, Fr.

Jua Jackson, DB, 6-0, 175, Fr.

Danny Rubalcava, RB, 5-7, 180, Fr.

Demond Winston, RB, 5-6, 165, So.

Outlook: Frank was a backup at Orange Coast last season but transferred and won the starting spot for the Rustlers, who averaged 33 passes per game. Matt Wentz, who is a reserve quarterback, is also the punter. The secondary and linebackers are the most talented and experienced players on the team, according to Shaughnessy. Jackson is a transfer from Fresno State and is from Artesia High. Stocks had 31 tackles as a freshman and improved greatly after working hard in the off-season. Winston came to Golden West after playing at Rio Hondo, which folded its program last season. The offensive line, only seven players deep, is the major concern.

Saddleback

Coach: Bill Cunerty, third year, 19-3

Last season: 11-0, co-national champions

This season: Expectations are lower

Coming Back

Brad Baker, OL, 6-2, 295, So.

Phil Cruz, RB, 5-11, 215, So.

Rod Fraser, TE, 6-4, 225, So.

Keith Hocking, DB, 5-11, 180, So.

David Josker, LB, 6-0, 235, So.

Brendan McGraw, RB, 6-1, 210, So.

Brandon Smith, LB, 6-1, 325, So.

Steve Sutherland, DL, 6-3, 240, So.

Bret Thompson, P/PK, 5-10, 215, So.

Brian Wilson, QB, 6-1, 190, So.

Coming In

Nick Gerasimou, RB, 6-0, 235, Fr.

Eddie Kealoha, RB, 5-6, 165, Fr.

Lawrence Mariner, TE, 6-1, 230, Fr.

Matt O’Connor, QB, 6-4, 200, So.

David Seale, DL, 5-11, 210, Fr.

Outlook: Cunerty and his program had a rough summer when the team’s budget was cut about 30%. The primary practice field was cut nearly in half to accommodate the expansion of the baseball field for the Mission Viejo minor league baseball team. But other coaches don’t have a lot of sympathy, considering Saddleback’s success the last two seasons. O’Connor and Wilson are working hard to start at quarterback in place of Justin Vedder, who is starting for California. Linebackers Smith and Josker improved greatly with each game and are the defensive anchors along with lineman Sutherland. Sutherland and Smith were second-team all-conference selections. The Gauchos are ranked second in the state in the first poll.

Fullerton

Coach: Gene Murphy, fourth year, 19-20-2

Last Year: 5-5, gave up 67 points in a game

This year: Five assistants in first year

Coming Back

Chris Bagley, DB, 5-11, 185, So.

Geoff Berg, QB, 6-1, 180, So.

Matt Frembling, LB, 6-3, 225, So.

Glen Giesen, OL, 6-7, 320, So.

Ken Marquardt, DB, 5-11, 200, So.

Brian Sardina, LB, 5-11, 205, So.

Anthony Scott, WR, 6-6, 215, So.

Jason Shields, OL, 6-4, 285, So.

Adam Tomps, DL, 6-3, 230, So.

Jeff Wucinich, LB, 6-3, 230, So.

Coming In

Terry Hess, QB, 6-2, 200, Fr.

Lazell Kitchen, RB, 6-0, 190, Fr.

Frankie Salazar, DB, 5-11, 170, Fr.

Odyssei Wilridge, RB, 5-10, 195, Fr.

Richard Wilson, WR, 5-9, 180, Fr.

Outlook: Berg, who will start at quarterback, worked mostly as a backup last season and threw for 328 yards and three touchdowns in eight games. Fullerton got instant depth at quarterback when Hess, a redshirt at California last fall, arrived at the end of summer. The team’s strength is at linebacker and in the secondary. Wucinich had 34 tackles and Sardina 24 last season and Frembling had 33 in 1995 but sat out last season. Alex Carbajal and Mike Flores, both defensive backs, and Chuck Pine, a defensive lineman, started in 1995 and have returned this year. Scott, who had 23 catches last season, broke his collarbone in practice and is expected to miss about a month. The lack of experience on the offensive line is the biggest problem.
