Mayor Suspected of Driving Under Influence in Crash

Mayor Pat Miranda was arrested over the weekend on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol after his pickup struck a street sign pole and a neighbor called police, authorities said.

Miranda was driving his pickup truck west on Calle Del Norte about 10:15 p.m. Saturday when he struck a pole at Irwindale Avenue, police Cmdr. Chuck Crawford said.

Miranda declined to give his consent for a blood-alcohol test, Crawford said. Under California law, refusal to provide such consent can lead to suspension of a driving license.

Several members of the Miranda family are locally prominent, including Miranda’s brother, Julian, who is police chief, and his nephew, also named Julian Miranda, a fellow councilman. Miranda could not be reached for comment.

Crawford said Miranda was cited and released. Miranda has been ordered to appear in Citrus Municipal Court Oct. 1. Crawford said the district attorney’s office will decide whether to file charges against the mayor.
