School to Celebrate Mexico Independence

Share

San Fernando Elementary School is inviting the public to a community celebration today to commemorate Mexican Independence Day.

The free event, from 1 to 4:30 p.m., will feature singers, mariachi bands, ballet folklorico and other Mexican-themed entertainment performed by students, parents, staff members and volunteers, school officials said.

“I would say that 90% of our students have Mexican heritage, so this is a big event for them,” said Angie Stoiloff, the school’s office manager and one of the event organizers. “The school is working hard to make this a worthwhile event for the kids.”

Mexican Independence Day is Sept. 16, but school officials chose to hold their celebration today.

Money raised from food sales and games will benefit the school’s student body account, Stoiloff said.

Among other uses, the account helps to pay for five-day field trips every other year to Valley Forge, Pa., to study American history.

Several community leaders are expected to attend today’s event, including Assemblyman Tony Cardenas (D-Sylmar).

San Fernando Elementary School is at 1130 Mott St., in San Fernando.
