Phone Volunteers Sought for Women’s Help Line
The National Council of Jewish Women/L.A. is recruiting volunteers for its Women Helping Women talk line. The next orientation session will be Oct. 21, said talk line director Lori Karny.
Volunteers are screened for the program before being trained to answer calls. Callers range from women who are victims of spousal abuse to women on the verge of homelessness, Karny said.
Over the last several years, Karny has found that “people are in more crisis and severe poverty than before, while the problems have become more complex, often with two or three layers.”
The training teaches volunteers “to listen to anyone about anything,” she said. Volunteers who speak Russian and Spanish are especially needed, she said.
