Team Gains Tie on Penalty Shot

Sean Pronger scored on a penalty shot after regulation time had expired to rally the Mighty Ducks to a 5-5 tie with the Edmonton Oilers in an exhibition game Saturday at the Pond.

Pronger sliced through two Oiler defenders after accepting a pass from the right wing from Scott Young, but was pulled down from behind by defenseman Boris Mironov with about five seconds left in the third period.

Referee Rob Shick blew his whistle and immediately pointed at the center faceoff circle to indicate he was awarding a penalty shot. Pronger was given the chance to tie the score and he didn’t miss.

He skated to the front of the net, deked Edmonton goalie Steve Passmore, then lifted a shot into the top of the net.

“I thought we were cooked,” Duck Coach Pierre Page said. “I’ve never seen a penalty shot awarded like that--with no time left like that.”

The Ducks (2-1-1) trailed, 5-3, starting the third period. But Young, acquired Wednesday from Colorado, sliced the deficit to 5-4 with his first goal in his first game as a Duck.

Kevin Todd, Warren Rychel and Steve Rucchin also scored for the Ducks. Bryan Muir had two goals and Joe Hulbig, Dean McAmmond and Ray Whitney scored for the Oilers (2-1-1).

Rookie forward Espen Knutsen strained his groin in the second period and did not return to the game. . . . Center Mark Janssens needed three stitches to close a cut over his left eye suffered during a second-period fight with Edmonton’s Bill Huard. Janssens returned to the game in the third period.
