Foster’s Versatile Show Is a Smash

Let it be known that Tustin High running back DeShaun Foster is getting used to being the featured player in the Tillers’ offense.

Foster literally ran, caught and even passed Orange County’s fourth-ranked football team to a 49-19 victory over El Modena Friday at Tustin High.

The senior ran 17 times for a career-high 314 yards and four touchdowns. But he also caught two passes for 59 yards and capped his all-around effort with a 33-yard touchdown pass to Julius Williams.

“Before the Foothill game I was nervous,” Foster said about taking on the role as the featured back in Coach Myron Miller’s offense. “Now it feels more natural.”

Foster had touchdown runs of 34, 68, 60 and 54 yards.

“We’re giving him the opportunity to be a great back and he’s breaking tackles and making them miss,” Miller said.

Foster’s performance gave him 716 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns this season for Tustin (3-0).

When Foster wasn’t touching the ball, Tustin quarterback Todd Scott was mixing in a few more passes in an attempt to diversify the Tiller attack.

Scott completed five of nine passes for 133 yards and a 25-yard touchdown to tight end Josh Schaer.

El Modena (1-2) was unable to get much of a running game as senior running back Charlie Williams was in street clothes.

Quarterback Matt Garcia was effective for the Vanguards. He finished 14 of 27 for 173 yards and a four-yard touchdown pass to Alex Cesa in the fourth quarter. Garcia’s pass to Jason Sherrill for a two-point conversion cut Tustin’s lead to 42-11.

El Modena’s defense came right back after Tustin started the next drive at its five.

A botched pitch from Scott to Brandon Malcolm was recovered by El Modena’s Jerome Anderson in the end zone. Garcia and Sherrill hooked up again for the two-point conversion pass.
