Moorpark’s Rotary Club, sheriff’s deputies and city officials Friday recognized Mark Englander for his service to the city by naming him Police Officer of the Year at a luncheon.

Englander is a detective who has worked with the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department in Moorpark for the past four years. He is known among colleagues and some residents both for his compassion and his persistence following up on crimes.

“He always goes the extra mile in that he follows up with people that are victims of crimes and lets them know what’s happening,” said Sheriff’s Capt. Mike Lewis, who heads the Moorpark force. “He’s very personable and has created really good relations with the community.”

In addition, Englander has trained new patrol deputies, served on a task force to curb gang activity and helped enforce traffic safety among commercial trucks.

When off duty, Englander has been involved at Moorpark High School with Cops-and-Jocks, a program designed to forge stronger ties between teenagers and police.
