Council Will Consider Hotel Height Exception
A proposal to build an expansive hotel complex at 19th Street and Newport Boulevard cleared a preliminary hurdle Monday when the City Council agreed to review the application, which calls for exceptions to the city’s general plan.
A San Diego-based developer and architect wants to exceed height and density limits on the site, across from Triangle Square. City staff will process the application for the Costa Mesa Hotel and prepare it for Planning Commission review this summer.
Carter Reese & Associates want to build a seven-story tower and refurbish an existing Spanish-style office complex in a neighborhood with a four-story height limit, said Deputy City Manager Donald D. Lamm.
Conceptual drawings show 387 guest rooms, along with shops, restaurants and offices, on seven acres at the mouth of the Costa Mesa Freeway.
City officials have long wanted the Spanish-style office center converted for a new use, since Pacific Savings and the federal Resolution Trust Corp. left the property vacant about seven years ago.
