Hawaii-Hilo Battered by the Waves, 15-5

Pepperdine scored five runs in the first inning, added five more in the eighth and pounded 16 hits in a 15-5 victory over Hawaii-Hilo on Tuesday at Eddy D. Field Stadium at Pepperdine.

Chris Cosbey had two hits, including a two-run triple, and three runs batted in for the Waves (23-15), and Dane Sardinha had a two-run double and a sacrifice fly.

Dave Reed (3-1) pitched the sixth and seventh, allowing two hits and striking out two.

The Master’s 11, Pomona-Pitzer 1--Danny Cato had four hits, including two doubles, and scored two runs for the Mustangs at Pomona-Pitzer.

Aaron Penberty had two doubles and two RBIs, and Rob Avila had a double, single and two RBIs for The Master’s.

SOFTBALL

Canyons 5, Bakersfield 3--Karla Nanne had two doubles, a single and drove in two runs, and Lupe Flores had three hits, including a double, and scored two runs for the Cougars (7-10, 3-2) in a Western State Conference South Division victory at Bakersfield.

Valley 17, Santa Monica 3--Norma Dorado had two hits and three RBIs, and Brenda Pulido added three RBIs for the Monarchs (14-6, 6-1) in a WSC South Division game at Valley.

Cal Lutheran 6-0, Concordia (Minnesota) 5-6--Kylie Gongola’s grounder to shortstop scored Kristine Everly with the winning run for the Regals (14-16) in the sixth inning in the first game of a doubleheader.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Pepperdine d. UC Irvine, 15-9, 15-9, 15-8--George Roumain had 14 kills and six blocks for Pepperdine in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at Irvine.

The Waves (18-3, 15-2) outblocked the Anteaters, 16-6, and had a 27-16 dig advantage.

Pepperdine also outhit Irvine (9-12, 5-11) with 54 kills and 15 errors in 89 attempts for a .438 percentage.

The Anteaters hit .162, with 46 kills and 29 errors in 105 attempts.

MEN’S GOLF

Western Intercollegiate Tournament--Andy Walker finished highest among Pepperdine golfers, in a tie for 50th place, and the Waves tied for 16th in the 20-team field at Pasatiempo golf course in Santa Cruz.

Walker shot 74-75-76--225 and finished 14 strokes behind champion Naoya Takemoto of UC Santa Barbara.

The Waves had scores of 296-298-303--897 to finish 29 strokes behind champion UC Santa Barbara.
