New Cathedral

Re Jeff Dietrich’s April 10 commentary, “Is a Grand, New Cathedral Our Way to Stand With the Poor?”: The answer clearly is “yes.”

Cardinal Roger Mahony isn’t taking the cathedral’s $163-million cost and burning it in the town square. That $163 million will go to workers for their honest days of labor. That supports the community and the will of Jesus far more than pouring that $163 million into soup kitchens for crack addicts, as Dietrich says he wants. How come he doesn’t get it?

* I have been waiting for someone to express, as Dietrich has done so eloquently, that the work of the Catholic Church is to administer to all, but especially to those among us who are desperately disenfranchised. Would Christ have built a $163-million cathedral as a monument to himself? Lest we forget, Christ chose to be born in a stable from which he went out among the multitudes to distribute the loaves and the fishes.
