City Plans to Annex 3 Acres, 36 Homes

The city would grow by more than three acres, and 36 homes, this spring under a proposal to annex the site of the former Sunkist packing plant off Orange Olive Road.

City Council members prepared the city for its newest property this week by approving a “pre-zoning” change. This brings the land into line with city zoning regulations, which differ to some degree from county planning rules.

On May 13, Irvine-based Greystone Homes Inc. will present its case for joining the city to the Local Agency Formation Commission, an independent agency mandated by the state to consider annexation requests.

Chris Payne, project manager for Greystone Homes, said he is confident the annexation will sail through.

“There hasn’t been any opposition, and I don’t see why there would be,” he said.

City planners said that property taxes would be redistributed between the county and city to defray the costs of fire, police, library and other municipal services.

“The trend is to absorb county islands into the city for more efficient services,” Community Development Director Jack McGee said.
