Longtime county resident Dorman Dean Johnson died Friday after a lengthy illness. He was 75.

Johnson was born Nov. 3, 1922, in Welty, Okla. He was senior class president at Stroud High School in Oklahoma, from which he graduated in 1940, his family said.

Johnson enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard in December 1940. He served aboard the USS Bowstring during World War II and was discharged in 1945.

Prior to his enlistment, Johnson attended Oklahoma State University in Edmond, and after his discharge he took classes at Oklahoma State University at Stillwater and at UCLA, his family said.

Johnson and his wife, Virginia, moved to Ventura in 1952. Shortly after their arrival, Johnson began a job at Sears as an appliance salesman. Following his retirement from Sears in 1978, Johnson worked for four years for Reids Appliances, his family said.

Johnson was a Toastmaster and a 25-year member of Alcoholics Anonymous, his family said. Before becoming ill, Johnson regularly spoke at AA meetings, his family said.

Johnson was preceded in death by two sons and two brothers.

In addition to his wife of 53 years, Johnson is survived by three sons, Scott, Mark and Craig Johnson, all of Ventura; three daughters, Teresa Johnson and twins, Helen and Viva Johnson, all of Ventura; two grandsons; and two great-grandchildren.

A visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Joseph Reardon Funeral Home in Ventura. A funeral Mass will be said at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Church in Saticoy. Burial will be at Ivy Lawn Cemetery in Ventura.
