SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Korleone Young, who announced he was making himself available for the NBA draft earlier this month, was injured in the Eddie Jones high school basketball All-Star Classic on Sunday night before an estimated 3,000 at the Great Western Forum.

Young, a senior at Hargrave Military Academy, suffered a cut above his right eye when he fell while pursuing a rebound. He tried to get up twice, but staggered and fell back onto the court each time.

He remained down for over 10 minutes, was taken off on a stretcher and transported via ambulance to Daniel Freeman Memorial Hospital, where he was treated for a concussion.

“I think he hit the spare [video camera] batteries in a bag,” said Hargrave Academy Coach Scott Shepherd, who coached the U.S. in Sunday’s game. “He cut his eye and it kind of dazed him. It’s very scary. You just don’t know what to think when you see someone stagger like that.”

Young, who was playing in front of seven NBA scouts, scored 29 points in the game, which was suspended after the incident with seven minutes left to play. The West led the U.S., 108-103.

Schea Cotton, who signed a letter of intent last year with UCLA and was days away from starting school when the NCAA invalidated his SAT score, scored 10 points for the West team.

Cotton has signed a letter of intent to play for North Carolina State.

Incoming UCLA recruits Jerome Moiso and Matt Barnes looked impressive.

Moiso scored nine points and demonstrated a soft shooting touch as well as strong rebounding.

Barnes scored 11 points.
