A 42-year-old man was arrested early Wednesday after he tried to flee a police pursuit that ended when he crashed into a parked squad car near downtown, authorities said.

Charlie Alexander of North Hollywood was being held at the Los Angeles Police Department’s North Hollywood Division on suspicion of burglary and violating parole, Officer Jason Lee of the LAPD’s public affairs division said.

The incident began at 2:05 a.m. when police on routine patrol heard an alarm at a business in the 3500 block of Cahuenga Boulevard in North Hollywood. Officers discovered a broken window and saw Alexander running toward his gray Plymouth, Lee said. They ordered Alexander to stop, but he started the car and drove off, eventually getting onto the Hollywood Freeway, Lee said.

Alexander exited the freeway near downtown, turned onto a dead-end street, and smashed into a black-and-white squad car that happened to be parked there, Lee said.

No one was hurt in the incident.

Police recovered a monitor and other computer equipment that Alexander allegedly stole from the North Hollywood business, Lee said.
