Palmdale Brush Fire Claims Trailer, 200 Acres
Winds fanned the flames of a fire that blazed through 200 acres of mostly desert brush Friday and claimed a trailer and a junkyard of old tires and cars before firefighters were able to put it out. No one was injured.
The fire began about 4 p.m. in the 39100 block of 10th Street East near Avenue P. It took about 200 firefighters and three helicopters to fully contain the flames by about 5:50 p.m., said Los Angeles County Fire Department Dispatch Supervisor Christa Tolliver.
“There was one building and a junkyard around it with many vehicles and used tires,” said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Sgt. Mike Graham. “That made for a pretty good fire.”
The fire also burned some asphalt on the property that required a hazardous materials team to clean up, Graham said.
The blaze stretched for a mile between 10th Street East and 20th Street East, Graham said. Sheriff’s deputies closed avenues P and Q and streets in between.
One man lived in the trailer that was destroyed. He and a family in a nearby house were evacuated, Graham said.
Authorities said late Friday that they did not know what caused the blaze, and sheriff’s deputies began a routine arson investigation, Graham said.
