The Living Tradition folk music series, seeking to raise money for a better portable sound system, is throwing a two-night benefit for itself Friday and Saturday. The Friday event is a concert, with jug band Secondhand Smoke, traditional trios Atlantic Crossing and Monday Night Waltz, and solo singer Bill Dempsey. Saturday is a contra dance night, with music by Watermelon Pie, dance instruction and an ongoing open jam session in an adjoining room. Dinner will be served both nights. Festivities start Friday at 5:30, with show time at 7, and Saturday at 4:30, with the dance from 8 to 11.

The Orange County Youth Symphony, led by John Koshak, will hold auditions Sept. 19. Students auditioning must be members of their school orchestra or bands. Rehearsals begin Sept. 23. Call (714) 993-2541.
