Jamie Moyer defeated the Tigers for the third time this season and Ken Griffey Jr. doubled twice to lead the Seattle Mariners over the Detroit Tigers, 3-1, Monday night.

Griffey, who leads the major leagues with 72 extra-base hits, was two for four. His league-leading home run total remained stuck at 42, and he has just one in his last 58 at-bats.

Moyer (10-8) improved to 3-0 in four starts against Detroit this season, lowering his ERA against the Tigers to 0.57 this year. He gave up one run and seven hits in 7 2/3 innings, helping Seattle defeat the Tigers for the eighth time in 10 games.

Mike Timlin finished for his 10th save, escaping a bases-loaded jam in the eighth when Gabe Alvarez grounded out.

Detroit’s Brian Moeller (12-9) gave up three runs and eight hits in 7 1/3 innings.

Griffey’s double put Seattle ahead 2-0 in the first following Joey Cora’s walk and Alex Rodriguez’s single. Griffey also doubled off the right-center field wall in the third.

Edgar Martinez doubled leading off the sixth and scored on Russ Davis’ single.

Detroit got its run the following inning when Geronimo Berroa walked and came around on Alvarez’s double over Griffey’s head in center.

After catching Alvarez at second on Luis Gonzalez’s comebacker, Moyer got into a two-on jam when Deivi Cruz doubled. But Paul Bako hit an inning-ending lineout.
