Cooling Trend Will Lower Temperatures During Week

After heat that topped 100 degrees during the weekend, the mercury dipped to double-digit temperatures Monday across the San Fernando Valley--likely the beginning of a weeklong trend for the region, according to weather experts.

But another triple-digit heat wave could arrive by Friday, said Scott Breit, a meteorologist with WeatherData, which provides weather information to The Times.

“The next couple of days are going to be very quiet, yawning type of days with typical late-August temperatures,” Breit said.

Indeed, the cooler trend that began Monday saw temperatures top off in the high 80s to high 90s throughout the Valley.

Burbank registered the day’s lowest high temperature, 89 degrees. Northridge claimed the highest with 98 degrees.

Other communities included Chatsworth at 95 degrees, Woodland Hills and Glendale sharing 94 and Newhall registering 93 degrees.

In the high desert, it was 98 degrees in Palmdale and 96 in Lancaster.

The Los Angeles Civic Center was a normal 90 degrees, Breit said.

Temperatures in the 90s are common for parts of the summer weather cycle in Southern California--but so are heat waves that hover over the century mark, Breit said.

This week’s cool trend began with a marine layer that arrived inland at mid-Monday--sooner than expected. It brought a fresh breeze that cooled down rapidly rising temperatures.

By Friday, however, a lack of marine air and high atmospheric pressure should combine to raise temperatures.

“The heat should be rebounding later in the week,” Breit said.
