* The first retrospective in more than 30 years of American painter Jackson Pollock’s work opens Nov. 1 at the Museum of Modern Art. Ends Feb. 2. Sept. 17-Jan. 12: “The New York School” presents drawings from the museum’s collection by artists affiliated with the New York School, including works by Helen Frankenthaler, Arshile Gorky, Adolph Gottlieb, Philip Guston, Willem de Kooning, Lee Krasner, Robert Motherwell, Barnett Newman and David Smith. 11 W. 53rd St. (212) 708-9400.

* Walter Bobbie directs the stage adaptation of the 1984 film musical “Footloose,” about a young man who tries to reintroduce dancing to a small town where a fiery preacher has gotten it banned. Opens Oct. 22. Richard Rodgers Theatre, 226 W. 46th St. (800) 755-4000.

* Part drama, part absurdist comedy, Roundabout Theatre premieres “Impossible Marriage,” a new play by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Beth Henley (“Crimes of the Heart”), and starring Holly Hunter. Previews begin Sept. 23 in the Laura Pels Theatre.
