Fire Officials Suspect Bottle Rocket Started 1 of 2 Blazes

Investigators suspect that people shooting bottle rockets might have caused one of two brush fires Wednesday afternoon in Ventura County.

There were no injuries, and no structures were damaged in either incident, fire officials said.

In the larger fire, six acres burned in a field at California 33 and Canada Larga Road in Ventura after arcing power lines sparked flames about noon, the Ventura County Fire Department said.

Two water-dropping helicopters and about 80 firefighters had the blaze contained by 3 p.m. A Southern California Edison spokeswoman said no power outages were reported, and police said the freeway remained open.

At about 1:40 p.m., a fire started in a field between Saticoy Avenue and the Cabrillo Village housing community in Saticoy, Ventura Fire Battalion Chief Glenn True said.

“A bottle rocket was shot off while we were on scene, which makes me believe there may have been one shot off earlier” that started the fire, True said.

There are no suspects, but True asked that anyone with information call Ventura police or fire officials.

A team of about 17 firefighters kept that blaze to about two acres.
