Arcades with Mortal Kombat and other video games with gratuitous blood, guts and gore are no longer welcome in Stanton, according to a city ordinance adopted last week.

The City Council, under a first review, passed the ordinance, which regulates where arcade and family-oriented amusement centers can set up shop. Under the ordinance, family amusement centers cannot be located within 1,000 feet of a school and cannot have patrons who are under 18 between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. The ordinance also restricts the types of games offered at family entertainment centers, banning those with violence, sex or explicit language.

“We want to make sure that kids don’t skip school, and we want to make sure that the games are family-oriented--not bloody or violent,” said Alexander Ethans, a planning official.
