3 Killed as Bus Crashes Into Truck at U.S.-Mexican Border
A bus went out of control Tuesday at the Mexican border, crashing into a truck pulling a recreational vehicle and pushing it over a pedestrian and a concrete barrier dividing the countries. Three people were killed.
Authorities said the bus was eastbound on Highway 1 in Tijuana. It crossed into the oncoming lane and hit the truck, which was pulling a recreational vehicle with Florida license plates.
The truck hit a man walking along the roadway and then went airborne over a 20-foot concrete border barrier, landing on the U.S. side at San Ysidro, San Diego police spokesman Bill Robinson said.
The two men in the truck were thrown from the vehicle and crushed when it landed on top of them, Robinson said. The men’s names were not released pending notification of relatives.
The cause of the accident was under investigation by Mexican authorities, who expected to release a report within three days.
“It could be a brake problem or could be rain,” San Diego Sgt. Mike Healey said.
Rain was falling steadily Tuesday afternoon in Tijuana, possibly making the roads slick, he said.
