Long Beach State’s May Named Big West Player of Year for 3rd Time
Long Beach State’s Misty May has been named the Big West Conference’s women’s volleyball player of the year for an unprecedented third time Tuesday.
May, who played at Newport Harbor High, also became the first player chosen to the all-conference first team four years in a row. May is the starting setter on a team that is 30-0, ranked No. 1 nationally and ready to open the NCAA Pacific Region playoffs Thursday night in the Pyramid against Southern.
May ranks among conference leaders in four of six statistical categories. She is fourth in hitting percentage (.401), sixth in assists (12.29 per game) and digs (2.99) and 10th in aces (0.31).
Long Beach Coach Brian Gimmillaro was named coach of the year for the second year in a row and the fifth time in his 14 years at Long Beach. Brooke Rundle of UC Santa Barbara was named freshman of the year.
Two other Santa Barbara players, Charlene Conley of Orange and Roberta Gehlke of Huntington Beach, were named to the all-conference first team. Cal Poly San Luis Obispo’s Kari DeSoto of Yorba Linda also was named to the first team.
Alisa Geddes of Cal State Fullerton and Michelle Wong of UC Irvine were named to the all-freshman team.
