Two men died in a head-on collision on a two-lane highway after one of the motorists tried to pass a big rig in the rain, according to California Highway Patrol officers.

A 32-year-old Alta Loma man was driving his Toyota pickup truck eastbound on Pearblossom Highway west of the San Bernardino County line Tuesday when he switched into the opposite lane to pass a semitruck. He slammed into a Chevrolet Malibu traveling in the westbound lane, “headlight to headlight,” said CHP Officer Scott Weldy.

“He didn’t see [the other car] approaching,” said Shirley Gaines, a CHP spokeswoman. The accident occurred at 5:30 p.m., east of Llano.

The driver of the Chevy was a 64-year-old El Mirage man. Both motorists were driving alone and both died at the crash scene, Weldy said. Weldy estimated both vehicles were traveling about 55 mph.

CHP officials declined to release the victims’ names Wednesday night pending notification of their families.

Moderate rain may have impaired visibility, officers said.
