Maryland Romps in ACC Opener

Second-ranked Maryland made its first 14 shots Thursday night and built a 22-point lead in the opening eight minutes en route to a 92-69 victory over Wake Forest at College Park, Md.

Obinna Ekezie had 19 points and the Terrapins, 8-0 overall and 1-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, had four players in double figures in the first half while taking a 54-29 lead over the Demon Deacons (6-2, 0-1).

No. 20 Pittsburgh 78, Prairie View A&M; 64--Isaac Hawkins had 22 points and 17 rebounds to lead the Panthers (7-1) over the Panthers (0-5), a surprise NCAA tournament qualifier last season, at Pittsburgh.

No. 24 Clemson 82, East Tennessee State 54--The Tigers (7-1) routed the Buccaneers (4-1) at Clemson, S.C., but the loudest cheer of the night was reserved for new Clemson football Coach Tommy Bowden and his wife, Linda, who were introduced at halftime.

Chamique Holdsclaw scored 22 points to lead No. 3 Tennessee (5-1) to an 89-47 rout of DePaul (1-3) at Knoxville, Tenn. . . . Nikki Teasley scored 16 of her 24 points in the second half to lead No. 9 North Carolina (8-1) to an 86-68 victory over Georgia Tech (4-2) at Chapel Hill, N.C., in an Atlantic Coast Conference opener. . . . Katie Cronin scored 20 points to help No. 12 Colorado State (9-0) hold on for a 70-69 victory over Utah (3-2) at Salt Lake City. . . . Tiffany Travis scored 24 points as No. 21 Florida (7-2) rolled to a 98-76 victory over Stetson (2-3) at Deland, Fla. . . . Nicole Kubik scored 24 points, including the final four, as No. 23 Nebraska (6-1) rallied for a 75-72 victory over Drake (2-3) at Des Moines, Iowa.
