Palisades Volleyball Picks Up More Honors

Setter Jennifer Badran-Grycan of Palisades was selected City player of the year in girls’ volleyball.

Badran-Grycan, a junior, helped lead Palisades to the City championship.

Hitter Lauren Carter and middle blocker Lucy Weiner of Palisades were named first-team All-City.

Outside hitters Keyshawn Hardwick and Joy Jordan and middle blocker Ebony Hoffman of Narbonne were also selected All-City along with outside hitter Gaby Gallardo and Youssra Marjoua of Poly, outside hitter Julianna Miyabe and middle blocker Kelly Speckman of Venice, middle blocker Kassandra Jiminez of Sylmar and setter Nancy Zaragoza of Garfield.

Mike Maio, who guided Woodland Hills El Camino Real to the 1997 4-A baseball title and four City championships this decade, announced his retirement earlier this week.

Maio, 59, coached the El Camino Real varsity for 16 years after serving as the junior varsity coach the previous 16.

“I’m just thankful for the opportunity to be associated with the kids,” Maio said. “I love them and I’m going to miss them.”

Friday’s football championship games will be broadcast live by KLCS-TV.

The Division final between Chatsworth and Reseda will air at 5 p.m. The City championship game between Wilmington Banning and Woodland Hills Taft will air at 8.

The games will be rebroadcast Dec. 27.

The girls’ individual tennis championships have been rescheduled for Dec. 15 at the Warner Center Racquet Club in Woodland Hills.

The finals were originally set for Dec. 14, but each of the preliminary rounds was pushed back because of rain.
