Toys Over the Top : A search of warehouse inventory piled to ceiling yields deals in Burbank.

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

When a bargain hunter sees the word “warehouse,” it’s an alert for a possible good deal. These warehouses may not offer posh or even comfortable surroundings, but generally the bargains are there, as in the case of a toy warehouse in Burbank.

L.E.C. World Traders stacks its inventory to the ceiling, so the aisles are narrow but the search is almost always productive. We found a cooking set for the little girl playing house complete with stove, dishes, pots and pans; retail on this runs from $25 to $29, but the tag here reads $12.90. One radio-controlled car, very similar to the Barbie car, sells at some toy stores for $40, but L.E.C.’s price is $19.90. And a doll stroller at $3.50 is a lot better than the $10 some places ask.

Other deals include: K-Nex’s Grand Prix racer at $10, and the Mobots Big Shot Builders from $4.50 to $10. Sturdy dump trucks or bulldozers (each comes with a kid’s helmet) usually are $40, but are $12.90 here. A calendar watch complete with alarm and compass would seem an expensive gift for a child, but at $3.49, how can you miss? L.E.C. buys directly from the manufacturers--at below wholesale--those items on clearance or marked surplus inventory.
