BCS Didn’t Exactly Bowl Anybody Over

Let us all take a moment to give thanks to the people who selected the bowl championship series committee. Because without them, the committee members might, instead, be air traffic controllers, in which case they could be patting themselves on their backs for landing seven out of eight planes correctly.

I’m tired of everyone saying how great the BCS turned out.

How great is it for Miami, which beat undefeated UCLA and ends up in the Micron PC Bowl? How great is it for Kansas State, ranked in the top five and playing Purdue in the Alamo? How great is it for USC, which has to play Texas Christian in the Sun Bowl? How great is it for the bowls that got stuck with these mismatches? How great will it be if Tennessee loses and we have half a dozen one-loss teams?

Then the national championship has still been decided by a vote.

So Chris Dufresne believes that the BCS “did its job” as evidenced by the fact that the No. 1 and 2 teams in the final polls and BCS rankings will play for the “undisputed national title” and that the “Fiesta Bowl fight was decided on the field.”

What was decided? That Florida State’s loss to North Carolina State was more impressive than either Ohio State’s upset by Michigan State or Kansas State’s dramatic overtime defeat by Texas A&M;?

I’m not saying that the BCS rankings are confusing. I’m just not really happy that next year we Bruin fans will have to hope that our computer science department can beat their computer science department.
