Quakes Hit Near Mammoth Lakes

Share

A flurry of earthquakes--the strongest with magnitudes of 4.0 and 4.1--shook a mountainous area 13 miles southeast of Mammoth Lakes late Sunday and early Monday, with no damage or injuries reported, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The most powerful temblors occurred Sunday at 9:54 p.m. in an area outside the volcanic Long Valley caldera east of the town.

All of the 16 quakes recorded between 8 p.m. Sunday and 1 p.m. Monday were centered at a relatively shallow depth of four miles, scientists said.
