Chart a Course for the Future

The fastest route to a holiday destination may be through cyberspace.

Paper maps and road atlases are quickly becoming tools of the past as Internet search engines like Yahoo, Alta Vista and others offer maps and directions online. The American Automobile Assn. even offers its famous TripTiks in electronic form.

Whether traveling across town or across the country, users can receive thorough directions to pretty much any address by typing in the street name and city.

Another site, https://www.mapquest.com, goes worldwide. With MapQuest, users can choose the shortest route, select between toll or free roads, and view directions in print or as an image. The site then produces a detailed map faster than you can say “Rand McNally.” Maps can also be e-mailed and printed out.
